The library supports recreational and educational reading and is the base for the provision of legal assistance for prisoners. It is also the focal point for Distance Learning at Lowdham Grange.
During early 2010 there will be a new larger library in a new houseblock. It will be linked to a separate room with provision for IT facilities and four small meetings rooms off the library. We are hoping that we can develop further the provision of online newspapers for foreign nationals through a company called Press Display based in Canada once the appropriate server has been upgraded. We can also then start working with the Open University for the provision of their material online to our distance learning students. This will be a joint exercise with the Open University.
We are also able to use the British library lending scheme to provide material which is expensive and obscure. We provide films on DVD and should consider music CDs from the library which will encourage library usage particularly amongst the least academic prisoners, and hopefully we should then be able to demonstrate to them the full range of education provision at HMP Lowdham Grange.
