So what are the consequences?
In the first 8 months of 2008 we removed 12 prisoners from their family visits for trying to smuggle contraband into the prison during their visits Now they have been put on either closed visits or their visitors have been banned from visiting for at least 3 months, possibly longer.
A total of 31 visitors have been caught trying to smuggle contraband in a surprisingly short length of time. 9 visitors were arrested by the police and charged, 6 of these visitors have received custodial sentences with lengths up to 4 years. A further 9 visitors are awaiting trial and 10 prisoners have been placed on 'Closed Visits' for attempting to receive contraband during their visit.
Bet they wish they hadn't bothered.
